AMERICAN WAR TRIVIA was compiled and edited by Gregory Simonds, author of numerous books found on Amazon, including many authored under various pseudonyms. As the son of a World War Two veteran, and the father of a United States Marine Corps officer, the author has a special interest and devotion to the U.S. Military and their role in world affairs.
This book uncovers many interesting tidbits about America’s involvement during 250 years of armed conflict, from the beginning of the Revolution to the current War in Afghanistan.
For example:
•Of the nearly 200,000 African Americans who fought for the North, more than 100,000 were runaway slaves. The number of African Americans who enlisted in the Union Army was larger than the number of soldiers in the entire Confederate Army in the final months of the war.
•The United States military listed as missing 190,000 guns in the Iraq War, including 110,000 AK-47s.
•When a Soviet submarine commanded by navy officer Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov was authorize the use of nuclear torpedoes against the United States Navy, Arkhipov refused. He is widely credited with nothing less than saving the world.
•Vietnam protesters often falsely claimed that the draft unfairly targeted minorities. In fact, over 80% of draftees were white, and 10-15% were African American, which was reflective of the relative population levels at the time.
